FPV Drone Takes Flight

Updated: Jan 11, 2023

FPV drones have gained popularity in the media industry in recent years as a way to capture unique and dynamic aerial perspectives for film and television production, sports events, and introductory videos to various establishments.

In the last 2 years, Skyshot has seen a steady rise in the number of FPV drone filming projects. We expect to see this FPV trend grow in 2023.

Skyshot has several FPV drones to cater for different filming scenarios

Introduction to FPV

FPV stands for "first-person view," and it is a type of video recording or streaming in which the camera is mounted on a device, such as a drone, and the video feed is transmitted to a display worn by the operator. This allows the operator to experience the flight as if they are in the cockpit of the aircraft.

Advantages of using FPV drone footage

One of the main advantages of using FPV drones for filming is that they can be flown in a much more agile and flexible manner than traditional drones, allowing the operator to get close to objects and capture smooth and stable footage from a wide range of angles. In addition, the immersive experience of flying the drone from a first-person perspective can be very exciting for the operator, leading to an increased level of creativity and artistic expression. Overall, the trend of using FPV drones for filming has helped to open up new possibilities for capturing aerial footage and has contributed to the growing popularity of drone technology in general.

1) Creative expression: FPV drones allow the operator to fly the drone in a very agile and flexible manner, allowing for a wide range of creative possibilities when capturing aerial footage. The immersive experience of flying the drone from a first-person perspective can also lead to increased creativity and artistic expression.

2) Indoor flying: FPV drones are well-suited for flying indoors, as are able to navigate tight spaces with precision. This makes them a useful tool for capturing footage in places where traditional drones cannot go.

3) Safer: FPV drones like the Cinelog 25 and DJI Avata are generally safer because they have propeller guards around the 4 tiny propellers. FPV drones are so small that they can take off from your palm. This can be especially useful when flying in crowded or confined spaces.

4) Crash Proof: FPV drones are traditionally built for drone racing. They are small, agile, and robust, built to take a beating.

5) Creative Transitions: Flying in tight spaces closer to the subject allows for smooth and seamless transitions. So planning for an FPV drone shoot and working out the transitions is key to having a successful shoot.
